HMI Glossary

  • HMI with display vs. HMI without display:

Whether an HMI solution is implemented with or without a display depends significantly on the range of functions, operating logic, and user requirements. An HMI with a display is particularly suitable for applications in which variable content, menu-guided operation, status displays, or extended functions need to be presented clearly. It offers a high degree of flexibility, information density, and user guidance. An HMI without a display impresses primarily through its clarity, directness, and robustness. It is especially useful when the focus is on a few, clearly defined functions and fast, intuitive operation is required.

  • Hybrid HMI: Combination of touch and mechanical buttons

A hybrid HMI combines touch inputs and mechanical buttons into an operating solution that optimally blends design, functionality, and operational safety. While touch surfaces excel particularly in variable, modern, and design-oriented operating concepts, mechanical buttons offer advantages for precise, robust, and tactilely distinct operation.

  • Short-travel keys

Short-travel keys are mechanical control elements with a defined, short actuation path, enabling precise tactile input. They are particularly in demand where operational safety, robustness, and clear feedback are paramount. A key advantage lies in their tactile quality: the user receives direct physical confirmation upon actuation. This ensures a secure operating feel and is especially useful in applications where targeted individual operation, use with gloves, or high suitability for everyday use are important. Furthermore, short-travel keys can be integrated very effectively into various HMI concepts – from classic control panels to high-quality surfaces with decorative or illuminated fronts – and can be used both as standalone control elements or in combination with touch or sensor inputs.

  • Capacitive touch input (PCAP)

Capacitive touch input (PCAP) is a modern input technology where touches are detected via changes in an electrical field. It enables high-quality, flush-mounted user interfaces and is well-established in many demanding HMI applications today. A major advantage lies in the combination of design freedom, ease of use, and integration capability. The technology is particularly suitable for applications where a modern look, closed surfaces, intuitive operation, and a premium feel are required. By integrating it behind glass, plastic, or decorative front materials, elegant yet functional operating solutions can be realized. At the same time, PCAP offers the possibility of flexibly integrating touch surfaces, sliders, or individual operating zones into the overall concept. Depending on the application, the technology can also be specifically tailored to requirements such as glove operation, the influence of moisture, or special design specifications.

  • Resistive vs. capacitive touch

Whether an HMI solution is implemented with resistive or capacitive touch depends primarily on the operating environment, user requirements, and design standards. Capacitive touch is particularly suitable for applications where a modern appearance, flush integration, and high-quality user guidance are the focus. It offers high design freedom and supports intuitive, contemporary operating concepts. Resistive touch stands out primarily where robust, precise, and environment-independent inputs are required. It is especially useful when glove operation, a defined pressure point, or demanding operating conditions play an important role.

  • Protection classes and certificates

When selecting an HMI solution, not only technology and design play a role, but also protection requirements and industry-specific certificates. IP and IK protection classes provide information on how well an HMI is protected against dust, water, impact, or vandalism. They help in assessing robustness and durability in daily use. Industry standards and certificates such as UL, CE, EN, or ISO ensure that the HMI meets legal, safety, and industry-specific requirements. They are particularly relevant in areas such as medical technology, automotive, food production, or industrial plants.

  • Bus connectivity: Profinet, EtherCAT, CAN bus & Co.

The choice of bus connectivity determines how an HMI communicates with controllers, sensors, and actuators. It is crucial for integration, performance, and compatibility in industrial and automated applications. Ethernet-based systems such as Profinet or EtherCAT offer high data rates, deterministic communication, and easy networking. They are particularly suitable for complex, fast processes and applications where many devices must work together synchronously. Fieldbus systems such as CAN bus impress with robust, interference-resistant communication, high reliability, and proven integration into vehicle-related or industrial controllers. They are especially suitable when stable, long-lasting networking at medium data rates is required.
